In this post I'm going to talk about the pipe that our group made for mini project 3.

You can find the pipe at pipes.yahoo.com/physicspipe. Our pipe combines the information from About.com, the MIT website, and Reddit.com for the most up to date physics information. The pipe sorts each new entry by the published date in ascending order. There are also more general information, such as good physics books to read, a planet found to have a tilted orbit around a distant star, infromation concerning the 4th dimension and even stuff about the string theory.
Basically the pipe has three feeds that are brought together with the "union" operation and then sorted, leading to the pipe output.

Ajax MashUps Fun Assignment 3

The previous post was strictly dedicated to my table for fun assignment 3, but i couldn't figure out how to get rid of that humongous space before you get to the table, sorry. In this post i'm going to explain my choices for the table and why.

The good mashups that i found are very common in that a lot of people would use them for their versatility and information possibilities, such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other major search engines. I also found that video sharing websites (Youtube, Megavideo, Dailymotion, and Veoh) are very useful and also widely used. Some other good mashups include PIXELPIPE and Track This. PIXELPIPE allows the user to send videos, images, audio, and video to multiple sources at the same time, instead of sending each file individually. Trach This allows the user to follow (track) their items that are bought on the internet as the items are delivered by FEDEX, UPS, and others.

The websites that were bad included: 1click2destiny, 5 dollar auctions, Age Directory, Air Travel Emmisions Calculator, and Addroo. Persnally i find websites that give you completely random information, especially if they only give you a very general and broad criteria for searching. 5dollarauctions is an ebay related mashup that shows a list of items sold on ebay for or under five dollars based on the parameters the user sets. The only reason i thought it was a bad mash-up, is due to the fact that i don't find the reason for searching for random things to buy just beacause they're 5 dollars. The Age Directory is a mashup that tells the user the age of their favorite actor. If someone was truly your favorite actor wouldn't you already know their age. The Air Travel Emission Calculator isn't very useful, unless for some strange reason you need to get an estimate on the amount of carbon emissions released to the environment from an airplane between to airports. To be frank most people only care about whether their plane will be late or not and how much they spend on tickets, not the environment, when taking an airplane. Last but not least i'm going to talk about Addroo. It's actually a pretty useful website because it gives you video, web, image, and news results all at the same time, but the problem is just that, it gives to much information at the same time. The entire window is filled with information and is a bit of an eye sore, but it does get the job done.

In searching for good and bad mashups i've realized that many mashups are created for the functionality not design. Many mashups also use components from very successful mashups such as: google, youtube, yahoo, and twitter.
